Drivers & Escorts
Drivers
The minibus drivers must hold a category D1 driving licence. This is included in most driving licences issued before 1997. In addition, drivers must have held a licence for at least 2 years, and if aged over 70, must meet Group 2 medical standards.
Before being accepted as a driver for the minibus, applicants will first:
-
Complete an Application Form
-
Undergo a familiarisation session on the minibus
-
Receive training on the passenger lift and the wheelchair tie-down system
-
Drive the first routine journey accompanied by a regular driver
All drivers will be encouraged to complete the training offered by the Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme (MiDAS) sponsored by Hampshire County Council.
Responsibilities
A minibus driver (and not the Minibus Group) is legally responsible for:
-
The condition of the vehicle (tyres, steering, brakes, headlights, fire extinguisher, first aid kit)
-
Wearing the driver’s seatbelt, ensuring children under 14 wear seat belts, and ensuring adults are aware of their legal responsibilities for wearing seat belts.
Also a minibus driver has:
-
A duty of care for passengers when on the bus and when entering or alighting
-
A responsibility for ensuring escorts are trained for any tasks requested of them
Only members of the Minibus Group may drive the minibus as they will be covered by the insurance.
Prospective volunteers for driving the minibus should contact the Secretary of the Minibus Group. See the Contacts page.
